Annet Nabulya is the headmistress of the school since 2007. Though a native Ugandan, she has the role of ensuring harmony between refugee and local children, visit families to ensure specific needs for their children are addressed in order to ensure children stay in school. She had to learn the language spoken by most refugees so they are more comfortable interacting with them and make them feel welcome to the school.

We are parents, teachers, students and volunteers committed to creating inclusive educational programs for refugee host communities.

Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jacques Bwira in 2011 resettled in Canada as a government sponsored refugee from Uganda where he lived in asylum for eleven years. As a school teacher he, in the year  2002 founded an education center to cater for the education of his fellow refugee children unable to attend local schools due to social and economic barriers.Though he now lives thousands of miles away, Jacques still overseas Great Lakes Primary school in Uganda as it’s director and visits every year.

We began our project in 2000 in a growing neighborhood outside of Kampala, Uganda. We were a small group of refugees from the DRC who wanted more for our children.

Our first educational program was very informal. We taught our children lessons underneath a large shady tree next to a church that gave us space.
